Okay, so...is our video game tester in a VR world really a human? Well, as human as any video game tester is, anyway. (rimshot) Sure, he could just be human, and his involvement with Skin Horse is either about to become relevant (i.e. he becomes a non-human lifeform) or simply coincidental (same building, ends up running across Tip or something). But it's more interesting (to me, anyway) to speculate about why he might already be a part of Skin Horse's mission profile.

Perhaps his entire life has been spent in VR, and he's really a transgenic animal. The "switch" he noticed might be a result of changing servers (i.e. the new server has non-trollish internet posts).

Maybe he's got a real human body, but is like Zeta Narbon, a humanform uplift.

Maybe his real human body died, and his brain is being kept alive in a non-human body while the VR system keeps him thinking everything's normal.

Any other suggestions?

---Dave

He's the human-shaped game avatar of the transgenic guinea pig currently conversing with him via the screen. So he's really talking to himself.

Who says Nick had a meat brain in the first place? He could be an artificial intelligence being raised as a human in a virtual environment. And for all we know, "Morpheus" faked the congenial online discussion -- he's already proven he can hack into one system, no reason he couldn't have hacked the discussion forum. But the end result is the same; the seed of doubt has been planted, and Nick questions the reality of his… reality.

I hate VR paradoxes. They're almost as bad as time travel paradoxes.
