The current issue of Skeptical Inquirer (Nov/Dec 2010) has an article on the explosion of supernatural romance books, including the claim that supernatural romance submissions tend to rise to the top of the slush pile pretty quickly. But, of all the specific supernatural entities mentioned, goblins are not among them.

Clearly, there is an untapped market here that can be exploited!

... THIS MUST CHANGE.

I say we think-tank this. Maybe if we all pull together on this and co-write, we can break into the genre with our best foot forward. Vampires and werewolves? Pah! Hack. SO last decade.

Lets get our goblin-smut on.

What in a young adult romance/supernatural novel would keep you interested and anxious? Keyword: young adult. No sex or anything.
But what characteristics in a young adult romance/supernatural novel would keep you on your toes?

Do you think I had the 1st idea what a squidhole was when I invented it? Certainly not! I was just messing about! That's when the very best & very Maddest Science gets done. I thought,Why, this alabaster octopus looks like it wants a nice transmission inside it,& fairly soon I had a thing that obviously had a Use, though what that Use could be was a total mystery.
(Sameness Engine) I haven't the 1st notion of what it's for! That's not why I made it-I made it for the sheer joy of making something new! It's getting up to tell me what it wants me to do, though, I can just feel it. It's been giggling a lot at night.

A valid question, enogenie--and one that, because I generally stay far far away from that genre, I'm totally unqualified to answer. (Er, unless Narbonic counts. That's kind of a sci-fi/fantasy romance, right?)

It is, of course, worth noting that the novels in the Hot Goblin Brotherhood series that Unity and Sweetheart enjoy so much are manifestly not squeaky-clean young adult books. If turning something like that into a real-world series is the goal here, the model to use probably adult romance novels (or adult fantasy/supernatural romance, if there are such things) rather than young adult fantasy/supernatural romance novels.

But your question is still worth considering, even in a, er, more adult series. Without well-developed characters and settings and a good tense plot, then no amount of steamy goblin sex will keep the book(s) from sucking harder than a shop-vac on steroids. Whoever ends up involved with this goblin romance novel project would do well to ask, "If we take the sex out of this book, what do we have left?", and then to make sure that the answer isn't, "Bugger-all, that's what."

Um. Not that my own reading experience to date is likely to make me much help.
