I just read 5 years of Narbonic in 3 sittings.

On June 29th 2005, one of Helen's shoulder sprites exclaims "Cushlamochree"!

Hah! Did anyone besides me get the reference?

What, you all did? .... oh, okay....

....
======
Hmmm, never thought of this before but maybe Sweetheart of "Skin Horse" is Gorgon with a gender re-assessment...

... and didn't Jane Shultz kick ass for a WWII comic daily? (I'm just sayin'...) [Man, that took me back. Way Back!]

Hmmm. Seem's I can't post URLS... guess that makes sense... But I did wish to indicate that "Cushlamachree" was a Catch phrase of Crockett Johnson[*]'s adorable comic "Barnaby". You can learn about Barnaby at double-you double-you double-you dot k-state dot Eee-Dee-You slash english slash nelp slash purple slash characters slash cartoons dot aitch-tee-em-ell.
(http://www.k-state.edu/english/nelp/purple/characters/cartoons.html)

+++++
[*]Probably best-known these-a-days for "Harold and the Purple Crayon"[**].
[**] Does Shaenon have good taste or what?

Back in the day, Eric Burns wrote a truly epic post about it on Websnark:

Ah, well. If I can't be first can I quibble about what a pork-pie hat is? (I *think* O'Malley's hat was a Hamburg rather than a porkpie but then again, I could be dead wrong).

My mother's childhood copy of "Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley" went with me to college as did my own Pogo collection. I remember a dorm-mate wanted something funny to read so I gave her a Pogo to which she imediately said she couldn't do talking animals. It was just a thing with her; no talking animals. I thought that was weird so I gave her "Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley" and Gorgon the dog had a line on the first page. I said I didn't count Gorgon as a talking animal because dogs aren't supposed to talk. She said it's on the front page; how could I overlook that. I said talking animals are when animals talk naturally, so as Gorgon is talking unnaturally it's an anomally in a world where animals can't talk. She said it's a dog; it talks; it talks on the very first page. I said she said talking animal*s*, it's only one. She said she wanted *no* talking animals; that means zero and not one. I said people are animals. She threw a bag of coffee beans at me. Good times.

I don't usually refuse to lose an argument on such feeble grounds, but the idea of someone refusing "Barnaby" *and* Pogo simply for an anti-talking animal quirk... well that just seemed criminal.
